About Creative Dance For Children

What makes Taira's class different than most other classes? Children are told what to do, but not how to do it. This approach allows children to move from an authentic impulse that is unique to him or her, rather than as mimicry. It is improvisational in nature.

Dance is a rich art form. It is multi-layered-- made up of many elements, which happen simultaneously. These are some of elements that Taira'sstudents work with to build their dance resources:
Movements with specific body parts and with the whole body
Locomotor movements (leap, roll, crawl, etc.)
In place movements (shake, sway, etc.)
Levels (low to the ground, high, etc.)
Space (moving through space on a diagonal, moving in the center, moving forward, sideways, backward, etc.)
Qualities (moving jerky, smooth, etc.)
Time (moving quickly, slowly, rhythm)
Stillness and Breath
Balance
Dancing solo, in partners, in small groups, as a whole group
Moving in "self space" and in "group space"
Performing and witnessing
Movements and dances inspired from: story, music, props, smells (essential oils), objects, emotions, images from the imagination, visual art such as drawings or nature photos

Taira has taught Creative Dance to children of all ages since the early 1980's. Her thesis for her Master's Degree in Movement Education was on
a movement/dance curriculum for children. She brings skill and a playful loving spirit to her classes.

"Together we can support your child's growth, health and well-being through Creative Dance. Engagement in true creativity builds your child's confidence and ability to think creatively and problem solve. It develops resources for life! "
~Taira Restar

Creative Dance Lab for Children
A weekly class for grade school boys and girls

Creative Dance Lab is an inter-modal approach to movement and dance, which combines somatic movement, solo dance, group dance & ensemble skills, theater games, play, performance, drawing, and storytelling. Noprevious dance experience needed.

Creative Dance for Young Children
A weekly class for preschool and/or kindergarten boys and girls.
An opportunity for children to dance, make music, play their stories and move their emotions. This weekly class encourages creativity, cooperation, motor skill development and artistic expression with other children. Scarves and other props extend range of motion and cultivate sensory and spatial awareness.

Girls Night Out
A monthly group for girls
A fun, creative, safe space for girls to express themselves in a variety of ways. Girls find support within themselves, in one another, and through their creativity as they move into the challenges of adolescence. Most evenings include a check-in, artistic expression/creativity and a potluck dinner of favorite foods. Girls share the work of clean up and celebrate each girl's birthday.

Nature & Arts Camp
A 5-day camp for boys and girls 8-12 years old
Campers enjoy nature crafts, painting, collage, and photography, theater games and improvisation, movement and non-stylized dance, creative writing, journaling, and story telling, quiet time in nature and self-reflection.

These many activities will be integrated together in an inter-modal expressive arts approach.  Camp is an opportunity to explore, to experience one's self as a valuable part of a larger whole, to express increative ways, to gain self-confidence, to socialize, play, and enjoy!
